Message 301 - Posted: 15 Dec 2015, 11:14:06 UTC - in response to Message 299.

I think the most attractive part about the project for most of the people attaching is the fact it is NCI. That is the primary reason I run it as it doesn't interfere much with other work. So, whether you gain more resources from going CPU intensive will probably depend on what other options people have at that time.
\r\n\r\n+1\r\n\r\nBeing NCI means I can have this project in my 5 PC without interfering with the other attached projects.

Honestly the NCI factor was the only thing that drew me to this project in the first place. I mainly focus on 1 CPU project at a time so having this project as NCI means it isn't competing against other projects and I can have it in the background.

\r\n\r\n+1. Exactly the reason I added this project as well.

In the main page you must put the adress of the project (www.....). It is useful to attach it to Boinc

Same for me. NCI is the reason why I've joined this project.\r\nStill waiting for android (I've got five waiting...) and badges would be nice.

So offer 2 apps. 1 for those that really like the NCI and a 2nd for those who want to put real crunching power on it. Then everyone is happy.\r\n\r\nBadges!

I like NCI projects. This is why I am running this one. I am not interested in this project as cpu intensive. I would have to discontinue this one if it went to cpu only. Please continue the NCI apps.\r\n\r\nBadges fantastic idea.\r\nBonus point day is also great.

Badges and Android
\r\n\r\nFirst, support for ALL the regular platforns: Win and Linux (32 and 64), OSX, Android (PIE and non-PIE). Bonus for Raspberry Pi support.\r\n\r\nThen badges. Don't use the crummy RAC badges that BOINC provides. No-one cares about those at all. Do have a different badge for the three apps if you can although some might say there's no choice between them because they're all NCI.\r\n\r\nOnce a month give 10x credit for the day. Pick the day at random so its not always the second Tuesday. That will get people talking and visiting.\r\n\r\nBuild a list of what's been found. Include it somehow in the stats.\r\n\r\nFinally some creative way to run a challenge that isnt just based on setting 'em and letting 'em run. PrimeGrid offers badges just for their Tour de Primes challenge. \r\n\r\nBut above all, no dead periods and keep up the responses on the forum. That's the #1 and #2 reasons why a project falters.
\r\n\r\nI'm liking the sound of the 10x credit once a month - that would DEFINITELY get a lot of UBT talking and joining - we love credit pormotions :D

If this project is NCI, can't you run more than one of each app at once? That would definitely help - I have a tonne of spare RAM left and I'd happily notch up the amount of tasks I'm running at once for this project!

\r\n\r\nAnd yet people will still run VM's to get more work units. If you want more resources brought to the project, you have to appeal to it. FreeHAL was unique and people got queasy because of the point payout for little CPU usage. BOINC users need to get past basing credits in a singular mentality and address other needs like disk space, network usage, RAM needs, etc... If you are afraid that people are going to point whore by running tons of NCI apps like FreeHAL attempted, then just reduce the point payout. However, you will see a migration to where the points lay. GPU's pissed the community off. Then it was NCI (with FreeHAL). Then it was ASICs. Just do your thing and let the users decide where they want to dump their resources.\r\n\r\nBy the way... people don't need to post a + or a +1 in the thread. Each post conveniently has a place to click the +/- to indicate if you like the post or not.

Has there been any more consideration of sending out more than one of each work unit per machine? There has been a surge of virtual machine usage due to the limitations. Some want to contribute more but do not want the overhead of virtual machines. \r\n\r\nI think the virtual machines may be taking CPU resources away from other projects that could utilize it better. Running VM's for an NCI app has a lot of wasted overhead to accomplish the same goal. Just curious about the thoughts of the Dev on this.

\r\nIt's non-CPU limitation. 1 wu for 1 host at the time.

I'm thinking that 1 wu per thread might be a compromise if an app_config can control it

\r\n\r\nI don't really see the logic to tying it to the core/threads. What purpose would that serve?
